Proseminar (kw/stw) 'Coast', a BBC Series Representing the UK

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Klaus Peter Müller

Kurzname: 06.008.030
Kursnummer: 06.008.030

Inhalt

We'll investigate the very successful BBC series 'Coast', which began in 2005 and reached its third series in 2009. It addresses the general public, but very clearly not just tourists. It's been connected with an Open University Guide and is evidently intended to pass on useful information to both British people as well as foreigners. The BBC thus fully adheres to what it is required to do by the Royal Charter it first received in 1926 and which was most recently renewed in 2005, its duty being "promoting education and learning", "representing the UK, its nations, regions and communities", and "bringing the UK to the world and the world to the UK" (http://www.bbc.co.uk/info/purpose/public_purposes/index.shtml). History is also an important element in the series, and we will find out what information about Britain is actually passed on to the spectators of the series and the readers of the book.
The focus of this class is on cultural studies, but students can also write term papers on the language used in this TV series (and, perhaps, also one or two others) as well as on problems of translation. Students can thus get either a kulturwiss. or sprach- / translationswiss. Schein.
