This seminar addresses the cultural issue of remaking. Remaking refers to situations in which one cultural form—sometimes called, however problematically, an “original”—is remade into a new form. Some examples of the remade forms that we will consider include: theme parks, themed spaces, and forms of historical re-enactment; film and video game remakes and transmedia; branded and corporate remakes; music sampling and popular aesthetics (the remix); textual remakes and adaptations; and corporeal, personal, and identity makeovers. We will consider the political, economic, social, cultural, and existential implications of cultural remaking and will do so through applications of classic and contemporary scholars, including Walter Benjamin, Jean Baudrillard, Linda Hutcheon, Henry Jenkins, and others.
