We've got a Scotland term this summer. Scotland has been an important research area in Germersheim for many years (cf. The Scottish Studies Centre here http://www.fb06.uni-mainz.de/englisch/183.php, and The Scottish Studies News¬letter http://www.fb06.uni-mainz.de/englisch/199.php, waiting for your contribu¬tions). We'll also have a conference on Scotland in October 2013 in Germersheim, 'Scotland 2014: Coming of Age and Loss of Innocence?' (http://www.fb06.uni-mainz.de/anglistik/conference_2013.php) with excellent speakers taking part. This summer term is, therefore, a kind of preparation for both you and me for this conference. Scotland as part of the British Empire, the re-opening of the Scottish Par¬liament in 1999, and the SNP's endeavours to bring about inde¬pendence. Yes, there is the myth of the brave Scottish hearts, but are they now too timid to vote for in-dependence? (Cf. The Scots' Crisis of Confidence below.) The de¬scription of the 2013 confer¬ence says that it is about time Scotland left Never¬land. What does this mean, and what are Scotland's possibilities today? This look into Scotland's history will surely provide infor-mation as well as answers to such questions. Students will also be confronted with the differ¬ent ways of looking at and understanding reality that one finds in the past and that are, per¬haps, worth remembering for solutions to today's problems. The past has, of course, different mindsets from the ones dominant today. We will learn about them, too.
