Prof. Dr. Donald Kiraly

Kurzname: 06.008.230
Kursnummer: 06.008.230

Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches

This is a course on QUALITATIVE RESEARCH in Theory and Practice in the area of Translation Competence Acquisition. It is open to MA and Diplom students only!

This will be a blended learning course, meaning that we will spend part of our time together in class, and you will spend the rest of the course time observing students acquiring translator competence while they work on an authentic translation project in a seminar. You will be working in a highly collaborative fashion most of the time, so if you much prefer to work alone, this course may not be for you!

Please note that we will have IRREGULAR class sessions this semester. The course we will be observing will have observable sessions at the following times:

Friday, 11 May from 10:00-13:00 (Rooms 386 + 373)
Saturday 12 May from 9:00-16:00 (Room 386 + 368)

Tuesday, 26 June from 13:00-16:00 (Rooms 386 + 362)
Tuesday, 3 July from 13:00-16:00 (Rooms 386 + 362)

In addition, we will be having one long introductory session covering the theory and an introduction to the practice of qualitative data collection and analysis on

Saturday, 21 April from 10:00-15:00 (Room to be announced)

Finally, we will have one last session at the end of the semester at which you will present the results of your work in "poster form". This will entail a very brief (5 minute) presentation of your poster (which will depict the results of your research over the course of the semester followed by an open-house type of event during which the students you have observed will visit your poster presentations and talk to you spontaneously about them! This session will take place at our "normal" class time on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 17th (room to be announced)

ALL STUDENTS TAKING THIS CLASS MUST BE PRESENT FOR ALL OF THESE SESSIONS! If you intend to have an overlapping course or if you have to work, play vollyball or anything else during any of the 6 sessions indicated here, please do NOT sign up for this course!

Written work and assessment: INSTEAD of handing in a conventional paper, all participants in the course will prepare a concise portfolio that will contain systematic notes, commentaries, questionnaire results and a short analytical essay on their findings. (Much if not all of this work will be done in collaboration with at least one other student!) You will be assessed on 1) the quality of your participation and collaboration (40%), 2) the quality of your portfolio (40%), and 3) the quality of your contribution to the conference event on the last day of the semester (20%).

In order for all group members to be able to work collaboratively using teamwork tools, it will be ESSENTIAL for all class participants to have a PC notebook with MS Office 2010 installed on it to use in class every week. (The home and student version costs approximately €100 for 3 (three) licenses, so this should not represent a severe financial burden for you. The course instructor will provide you will all of the course reading materials and a library of related books at no charge. You will also be given a high-quality digital recorder to use throughout the semester. PLEASE make sure that MS Office (including the OneNote program) is installed on your computer BEFORE our first class meeting. If this poses a problem for anyone interested in taking the course, PLEASE CONTACT ME BEFORE YOU SIGN UP FOR THE COURSE ON JOGUSTINE! If you sign up, I will assume that you understand what is needed and that you will come prepared to get started with the actual work at hand on the first day of class.
