PS/Ü Setting the Stage for Autonomy in Second Language Acquisition (BA)

Prof. Dr. Donald Kiraly

Kurzname: 06.008.230
Kursnummer: 06.008.230

Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches

This course will entail an introduction to classroom research in the area of second language acquisition. We will be working on an "Introduction to Spanish" course that was held at the FTSK in October, 2011. A veritable mountain of qualitative data was collected during this course in the form of extensive notes taken by student data collectors, audio and video recordings of most of the course (50 hours!) and also test results. In addition to learning about classroom research principles and techniqeus, we will work on the analysis and interpretation of these collected data ourselves. Course participants will be working in a largely autonomous manner to create and implement a research plan in the search for evidence of acquisition and/or learning in this data.

As the course was held entirely in Spanish, at least a basic knowledge of Spanish would be extremely helpful for participants in this course. As visual elements in the video data can also be in the focus of attention in the sub-projects, it will of course also be possible for non-Spanish speakers to participate actively in the course.

Instead of having the instructor present theory in the form of lectures, the course participants will have the opportunity to investigate and share their emergent knowledge on research methods and principles of second language acquisition and foreign language learning.

Instead of a conventional paper, the course participants' written work will comprise a portfolio of their work throughout the semester. This portfolio will document the development of pertinent theoretical and methodological knowledge as well as data collection, analysis and interpretation. Students will be encouraged to work in teams to prepare their portfolios.

All students can expect to be very pro-active and autonomous participants in this course!! If that doesn't sound like you, please reconsider signing up for it!
